The plastic footprint calculator

An ecological footprint calculator usually answers a vague question with a vague number. This one does the opposite: it weighs the packaging of the products you actually use and gives your footprint back to you in grams.

Most online ecological footprint calculators ask how often you drive, fly, or eat meat, and then return a single planet-shaped score. They are useful as a nudge, but they cannot tell you which shampoo bottle in your bathroom is doing the damage.

LessWaste takes the opposite path. The site is a public archive of everyday products, toiletries, household goods, groceries, each disassembled and weighed by hand. When you log a product to your impact page, the audited weight is added to your personal plastic footprint. Over weeks and months, the picture sharpens.

How the calculator works

  1. Step 01

    Find the product

    Open the products archive or the lookup tool and search by brand, name, or barcode. If we have weighed it, you will see its packaging broken down into bottle, cap, label, sleeve, pump, and inner liner, each with a recorded gram weight.

  2. Step 02

    Log it to your impact

    From the product page, log a unit to your impact log. That single click adds the audited grams to your running total, and, because the underlying weight is real, the number is defensible.

  3. Step 03

    Read your footprint

    Your impact page totals everything you have logged, this month, this year, all time. There is no carbon-equivalent gymnastics, no "planets" metaphor. Just grams of plastic, the way a recycling audit would count them.

  4. Step 04

    Swap, compare, and project

    Use the alternatives and comparison pages to put two products side by side. The calculator tells you, in grams per year, what swapping one for the other would do to your footprint.

The methodology behind the number

Every product in the archive is bought, opened, and disassembled. Component parts are weighed on a 0.01g scale, photographed, and attributed to a material, PET, HDPE, PP, PVC, PS, or mixed. Recyclability is recorded against UK kerbside rules, and the provenance of every figure is published on the methodology page. The result: an ecological footprint calculator that you can audit line by line, instead of trusting a black box.

Why grams, not planets

Footprint scores expressed in "earths" or "carbon tonnes" abstract away the decisions you can actually make. Grams of packaging map directly to a product on a shelf, and to a swap you can make next time you shop. That is the version of an ecological footprint calculator that changes a household, rather than just naming a problem.
