Cotton Pads vs Reusable
Reusable rounds pay for themselves in weeks and remove the plastic pack along with the pads.
Disposable cotton rounds look like the innocent item in a bathroom — they are cotton, after all. The waste is real but modest; the plastic is almost entirely in the bag they come in, and the cotton itself is thirsty to grow.

The differences
| Disposable | Reusable | |
|---|---|---|
| Uses per unit | 1 | 300+ |
| Units per year | ~730 | 16 total |
| Packaging | ~10 plastic film packs/year | One pouch, reused |
| Cost per year | ~$35 | ~$15 one-off |
| Water footprint | Full cotton cost, thrown away | Amortised over 300+ uses |
| Kerbside recyclable | No — pads or film | N/A |
Why one wins
Two pads a day is around 730 pads a year, arriving in roughly ten plastic film packs. The film is not kerbside recyclable in most places, and used pads soaked in micellar water or remover are not compostable in a normal bin either.
Conventional cotton is one of the more water-intensive crops grown; published figures put the global average around 10,000 litres per kilogram of fibre. Throwing that fibre away after eight seconds of use is the part that stings.
A pack of 16 reusable rounds handles the same job, goes in a mesh bag with a normal wash, and lasts several years. Payback against disposables is typically six to ten weeks.
For most skincare routines the performance is equal or better — a soft cotton or bamboo round holds toner just as well and does not shred.
